Nice post Monica, will have to catch up on your previous posts :)

All excellent points brought up. Time is probably the most important factor of social media that companies need to understand. It is not an instant thing and I believe hiring someone to do it for you should be the last option. I just think companies need to take a step back and really try to see and understand what 'social media' is. Hire a consultant if necessary but integrating some form of SM into any company is necessary.

I wouldn't necessarily say a consultant or freelancer - I would just say hire someone to do the job full-time, in-house even. The other option is to make social media a current employee's job.

Truthfully, I have no idea what that costs, especially since there is a wide range of options there. Someone might pay 40,000 for a new grad, or 150,000 for a VP of Marketing who handles social media. Consultants(/freelancers) can charge anywhere between $30-$500 an hour.

I wrote about hiring social media consultants in my book, so I'll post that section here as a new blog post. Thanks for the topic idea :)

Social media can be so time consuming! I think I just spent 2 hours today catching up on all of the great content online.

For Viralogy, publishing content, connecting with Twitter users, and thinking up ways on engaging on Facebook is a full-time job in itself.

You suggest hiring a social media "consultant" or I guess freelancer. Any suggestions on what's a good price to pay them and how to make sure they're legit and know what they're doing?

- Jun
